Purandar Greenfield Airport: A New Era for Pune's Aviation and Economic Development

As Pune's existing Lohegaon International Airport faces increasing saturation, the planned Purandar Greenfield Airport emerges as a beacon of hope for the region's aviation future. With a planned capacity of 75 million passengers per annum (MPPA), the new airport is set to significantly enhance Pune's connectivity and economic development.

The Purandar Airport project, developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), features two parallel runways measuring 4000 x 60 meters each, providing ample space for simultaneous takeoffs and landings. Additionally, the airport will boast an apron capable of accommodating over 100 aircraft, ensuring seamless operations during peak hours. The modern cargo terminal will facilitate the efficient handling of goods, bolstering Pune's position as a logistics hub. Moreover, the inclusion of a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility and an Aviation Training Organization will create a comprehensive aviation ecosystem.

Connectivity is a cornerstone of the Purandar Airport project. The airport will be accessible via road, rail, and a proposed metro line, ensuring easy and efficient transit for passengers and goods. The formation of a Special Purpose Vehicle—Pune (Purandar) International Airport Limited (PIAL)—comprising CIDCO, MADC (Nodal Agency), MIDC, and PMRDA, underscores the collaborative effort driving this ambitious initiative. The preparation of a development plan for the 2832-hectare airport site is in its advanced stages, signaling the project's rapid progress.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has granted clearance for the Purandar Airport, marking a significant milestone. As announced by Murlidhar Mohol, the former Mayor of Pune, this approval paves the way for the airport's construction and eventual operation.

The Purandar Airport is poised to play a vital role in shaping the future of air travel and economic development in the Pune region. The increased demand for aviation personnel, including Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs), is a promising development for institutions like Wingsss College of Aviation Technology. These institutions will be instrumental in training the skilled workforce needed to support the airport's operations and growth.

In conclusion, the Purandar Greenfield Airport represents a transformative project for Pune. By enhancing connectivity, supporting economic development, and creating job opportunities in the aviation sector, the airport is set to become a cornerstone of the region's future prosperity.
